I am becoming more and more frustrated with the double standards that so many Americans are using these days. It seems to me, that people don't stop, slow down for just a second, and think about what they are or are not complaining about or arguing for. The contradictions of peoples words and behavior is alarming. I am sure that there are some out there that know what I am talking about, but for those that might be a bit unclear on the topic, here are some examples.
Let's start with "The Mosque." I almost wish I could add a soundtrack of "dum, dum, dum," like in an old time television program. This to me seems to be one of the most insane controversies we have going on at the moment. I would like to think that it is purely political, just for show, but recent polling shows that more and more Americans have a viewpoint that seems to go completely contrary to what America is all about. Fact - we have a Constitutional right to practice any religion, anywhere, in the United States. Fact - the area in question is legally zoned for a religious facility. Fact - Christianity is not the "religion of America." So, whats the issue?
Some say Ground Zero is some kind of "holy ground," that cannot or should not be defiled in any way. So what about the vendors surrounding the construction site, selling 9/11 trinkets? What about the fast food locations that ring the site? What about the church, directly across the street? Oh yeah, it's a Christian church. "Ground Zero" is and will always be, a place that will evoke memories and emotions. I lost no one on 9/11, but I grew up visiting the WTC, skateboarding the vast areas beneath and between the towers. I took dates to the top of the tower and even spent my first wedding anniversary (1st marriage) in the WTC Hotel. I loved the area, the towers, the artwork, the views, the entire experience of the WTC. When I visited a couple years ago with my family, I got emotional. You would have to be pretty hard to not. But did I feel some sense of spirituality there? Did I feel like I was on hallowed ground? Honestly, I didn't. I want to see something great built in place of the towers. I want there to be some form of memorial, for generations to see, learn and know what happened on that horrible day. But in no way do I want, or feel it is needed, to see any connection to Islam. I don't want to see any connection to any faith or religion. This is a city block, in lower Manhattan, that used to have a huge office complex on it, and will have a huge office complex on it in the future. That is all it will ever be, just as it was.
People state that Muslims treat their women with less respect than men. They say that Muslims are trying to instill Sharia law here in America. They feel that the intolerance shown toward Christian religions in the Middle East, in some way OK's the same behavior here in America. But think about it. I grew up in a religion where women were not allowed to lead. There are quite a few religions that have that structure in place. I was raised to believe that everyone that did not believe and follow the religious course we were part of, were sinners, destined to die. And I am not talking about the heavy stuff, like stealing or lying. No, they felt that in addition to those common sense rules, if you did not do stuff like knocking on strangers doors, you were not doing what god wants you to do. Therefore, a sinner you are. And sinners go where??? Intolerance is a cornerstone of religion, Christian or other. In fact, with just a bit of digging, you will find that Christianity is more intolerant than a number of other religions. Islam and Christianity are neck and neck when it comes to intolerant behavior. Check it out - don't take my word for it.
Then there are those, like Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh. They continually spout a Liberal vs. Conservative rant. They tell us that America is going in the wrong direction, that we the individuals, need to take it back. Take it back from what? Correct me if I am wrong, but do we not hold elections on a regular basis? Did Obama not win, decisively? Was it not Bush and the Conservatives that got America into the mess it is today? Of course the Democrats are not blameless. That would be hypocritical of me to think that. None of us are perfect, so why should we feel our elected officials should be? And since when is it wrong to have an opinion? President Obama stated that our "Constitution guaranteed the freedom and the right for the Mosque" build. That is a fact, not opinion, but his next statement, expressing how, although it is a right, it might not be the best, based on the furor surrounding the issue. Of course, he was damned either way. He clarifies the Constitution, which he is sworn to uphold. But he recognized the issues some are having. How is that wrong?? But, Beck and Company made it so.
Glenn Beck wants to restore honor back to America. When did we lose our honor? When we invaded Iraq? When we tortured prisoners, held them without representation? When we secretly shipped prisoners to countries that torture more than we do? How about when we ignored New Orleans and the Katrina victims? Or was it the "no strings attached" bailouts of banks and trading firms? Again, was that when we lost our "honor." If so, how will Glenn Beck and his ilk help restore it? After all, he was the biggest cheerleader, the biggest whore, for the Bush administration. He is the biggest complainer and the biggest rabble-rouser against President Obama and the actions he has taken. Call it what you want, but I and many others voted for Obama. Which means we voted for healthcare reform, for banking reform, for an end to Bush Tax Cuts for the wealthy, for a complete change in the way America was being governed. Call his method Socialist or whatever, but we have proof, beyond a reasonable doubt, that Capitalism does not work the way it was explained it would work. In fact, it has failed and continues to fail. So what is wrong with trying another method?
Beck says that the government is wanting to control us, take over, lead us, regulate us. He states that we should "take back our freedom" and get in control. He states that the Liberals in politics and in the media, scare Americans with the worst case scenarios of what will happen if we don't follow in step. But Glenn Beck does the exact same thing. He scares his viewers with what he feels will happen if we don't do exactly what he suggests. His tactics are more aggressive, more abhorrent, than anything our government is doing. But he doesn't see that. He thinks his way is the right way. He does not step back, slow down, and think about what he is saying and doing. He does not seem to care what others will do upon listening to his rants. But the fact is, is that there are unstable people out there, who listen and act out in negative ways. The taxi cab driver who was stabbed by an anti-Muslim individual. The shoot-out with cops by a father/son combo, bent on taking back their rights and "their" government. Oklahoma City, Ted Kacinzky, the IRS plane bomber, the list goes on and on. On every side, there are extremists and idiots. But people don't see that, in themselves or in those they admire and follow. And that is what damn's us.
We need to all just stop, slow down, think about what we say and do. How we raise our families, how we interact with the public, how we treat our friends, neighbors, employees and strangers, all of that makes an impact in society. If we label people without getting to know them or what they believe, we are no better than those we label. Call me a Liberal. Why? Is it because I vote Democrat, appreciate good music and movies, read Esquire and the NYT? I pay my bills on time, with money I earned. I raise my children to respect others, and make absolutely certain that they know right from wrong. I take responsibility for their actions, their learning, their everything. I love my wife and appreciate my friends. I thank my servers, be it at the drive-in or at a fancy restaurant. I take my garbage to the receptacle at the theater. I try to drive like a sane person, although I will admit I do like to tailgate at times. I do what I can to respect others, knowing that my way is not always the "right way." Just because I believe or act a certain way, does not mean that your way is wrong. No more than the opposite. So please, stop, think about what you do and say. Calling our President a Socialist does not endear others to your cause. Tell us why you feel the way you do. Tell us your solutions. I have to laugh when I hear people express a "talking point" but have nothing to add or offer beyond that.
So what if President Obama is a Muslim?! Does he have to be Christian to be President? No!! Does being Muslim make him less of a man, less of a leader? No!! I for one would feel better if religion was completely taken out of politics, like it was originally intended to be. Better yet, give me an Atheist president. To me, that would equate to a more balanced leadership, knowing that instead of faith in the supernatural, our president would be looking for actual, tangible solutions to our problems. Instead of kowtowing to special interest groups, our president would focus on leading everyone, not playing favorites, depending on specific beliefs. You don't approve of gay's marrying? But it's OK that 1 in 2 marriages ends in divorce? You don't believe in abortion? Don't get one. Drugs? Don't take them. The list goes on and on, where personal responsibility has been given up in the name of religion and rules. I raise my children to obey the laws of the land, and to treat others as they would want to be treated themselves. Hating others because they believe different, that is not right? Ostracizing others because they choose a different path? Where is the love, the understanding, the compassion? We focus too much on what we don't like, usually of others, and ignore the traits that make us unlikeable to everyone.
So again, stop, think, listen, learn. Read a book. Learn our history. Learn world history. We are on track to repeat the same mistakes of the past. We are on track to become a third world country, with a piss poor education system, a broken healthcare system, a divided and divisive political system and worst of all, we are starting to turn on each other. That my friends, is a scary thing. We are damned, unless we wake up, grow up, and straighten up!!
